Oh, of course I was. Every writer starts out as a bad writer. By now, I've written, torn up, rewritten, set fire to, and rewritten enough rough drafts to change that. ​​

I like to think of everything as a rough draft, as another opportunity to improve. To experiment. To learn. And when you love writing as much as I do, when nothing lights up your brain like unearthing a new twist of language or a new way to tell a story, the learning is just as fun as the craft itself.
